Investigate the possibility of control of an individual by application of special interrogation.
To study memory enhancement.
Establish defensive means for preventing hostile control of Agency personnel.
To evaluate offensive uses of unconventional interrogation techniques including hypnosis and drugs.
A 1952 CIA Project ARTICJOKE memorandum maps out further objectives:
âThe evaluation and development of any method by which we can get information from a person against his will and without his knowledge. Can we get control of a person to the point where he will do our bidding against his will and even against such fundamental laws of nature as self preservation?â
Robert Hyde conducted CIA experiments in Projects BLUEBIRD, ARTICHOKE and MKULTRA. After years of investigation and consults with experts, I believe LSD, hypnosis and other forms of brainwashing were used on me while I was a patient in the Burlington hospitals and in VSH. I would have one more disturbing incident during therapy with Kathy that once would once again raise the question of implanted hypnotic suggestion.
After I recuperated from the adverse drug reaction I returned to the unit in December, 1987. All signs of the drug-induced âpsychotic breakâ were gone and I tried to settle into the routine of the unit again. There were new patients on the unit and I became friends with two. Peggy was a young mother struggling with her own issues from childhood. She and I shared a hospital room and quickly became friends. Andrea joined in with Peggy and I and the three of us spent most of our time together.
It was still almost impossible for me to openly discuss the MPD although I did talk more freely with Mary and Lynne. I was still struggling to understand my illness and to be able to access information buried in my unconscious mind. The unit staff watched as I cycled through one personality after the other. There were child alters and intensely protective alters. It still amazes me how consciously removed I was from my own self. Dr. Fox wanted me to deal with the MPD in private outpatient therapy and I was adamant that the only therapist I would see was Kathy Judge.
Kathy didnât have an opening in her schedule until January. The unit staff brought me the names of numerous local therapists and I rejected all of them. Kathy was the only therapist I would consider. Rosemary Johnson, who worked with Kathy in 1969 at Rutland County Mental Health, phoned Kathy. Rosemary reminded Kathy that she had known me in 1969 and told Kathy that she was the only therapist I would see. Dr. Fox also contacted Kathy to ask her to see me in therapy.
Kathy later told me that during the phone call with Tom Fox, he told her my diagnosis. Kathy told Tom that although she had experience in dissociation, she hadnât taken on a full-fledged multiple before and that she wasnât even sure that she believed in the disorder. Tom replied that she would believe.
âWhy me?â Kathy asked Tom.
âBecause she believes that itâs you,â Tom answered.
